Congratulations, moving into child care for the first time is an exciting milestone! The most important thing to remember during the childcare transition is to stay positive. You are the most important factor in how your child will respond to childcare.

Children can tell when their parent is uncomfortable or anxious. Try to find playful and fun ways to talk about childcare. On their first day talk to them about why you are leaving a when you will be back.

Be Patient

Children will become comfortable with childcare at different rates, and while most children will adapt within a few weeks some may take a little longer to settle. Seldom will a child be unable to adapt to childcare.

The transition period can be difficult for parents; however, it is important to remember that it is completely normal for children to take some time getting used to being in care. Stay calm and give your child time to adjust.

Come Prepared

To ease the transition to child care, it is important to come with the right gear! Most childcare centres will require you to pack a hat and water bottle. Having things from home will help your child to feel more comfortable.

Having something special from home, like a favourite blanket or toy, can help children to adjust to a new day care situation. Don’t forget to clearly label everything you bring!
